National Cyber Security AwarenessOctober – Autumn, Halloween and Cyber Security

October is right around the corner, and for many of us, it’s a time to celebrate the coming of fall. Children dress as goblins and go trick-or-treating, while adults get a head start on their holiday shopping. With so many fun things ahead of us, work and business inches lower on the priorities list, and we’re not likely to be thinking of IT staff augmentation right away.

But believe it or not, October is also a time for cyber security and taking a stance against online threats. October is National Cyber Security Awareness month; we at Finchloom take this time very seriously, and we want everyone to be in the loop when it comes to defending their data.

What Is National Cyber Security Awareness Month?

National Cyber Security Awareness Month began 14 years ago, through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the National Cyber Security Alliance.1 In today’s age, virtually everyone is a consumer. Everyone uses computers and internet applications to get things done, and we are all potentially vulnerable to hackings. As technology grows, so do the threats, and it’s important to know how to protect ourselves.

National Cyber Security Awareness Month was built to educate the private and public sectors about how to protect their data.2 Every week, different events and activities take place to teach people about the importance of cyber security, and give businesses and individuals alike what they need to stay safe against online dangers.

As a small business owner, you can help yourself by having an augmented staff or IT help desk outsourcing, so you’ll always have a go-to source for your security needs. You can also increase awareness among your customers and ensure they know how to defend themselves against online attacks. Here are some things to learn and tell your clients about:

  • Password Management

Passwords are always falling into the wrong hands. If a cyberthief or hacker gets hold of this information, the victim is immediately at risk, and clients must learn to manage them with vigor and clarity.

The first thing your clients should do is change their passwords regularly. Hanging onto the same passwords for long periods makes them vulnerable, and regular changes in their password settings will keep criminals constantly in the dark. It’s also important to create hard-to-guess passwords by making them long or using special characters and numbers.3

  • Multi-Factor Authentication

When a solid password isn’t enough, multi-factor authentication comes in handy. While the process behind multi-factor authentication is longer, it can do more to protect what’s personal or important to you. For example, if you log in to an account, you can also receive a call or text message with a code to enter in a follow-up screen. This is a prime example of multi-factor authentication.

The option gives users far more protection. If hackers get a hold of their passwords, they’re not likely to have access to their phones or contact numbers, and as soon as a client receives a call with a code, they’ll know something is up. The hacker cannot fulfill the next steps, and the client can change their password or take the necessary precautions to ensure their account is no longer compromised.
